best Liverpool kits: greatest ever LFC shirts

You’ll never walk alone. Well, you’ll never walk in a rubbish Liverpool kits after reading this.

The list of legendary players that have pulled on the famous of LFC is a stupidly long one.

Starting from Dalglish and Keegan, through Barnes and Rush, ending with Gerrard, Suarez and Salah. To name a few.

Anfield is a much-feared cauldron in world football, having hosted countless Premier League tussles and Champions League clashes.

Umbro, adidas, New Balance and more recently Nike, have all chipped in with superb designs. Don’t worry, there’ll be no mention of *that* Warrior era from us.

Get ready, because this is going to be much more interesting than watching Crown Paints dry.

We’ve talked before about how moments and occasions can propel average shirts to star status. This is another one of those.

You know the jig. Istanbul, Turkey. Benítez’s Reds were all but beaten, trailing 3-0 to the mighty AC Milan at half-time. Gerrard and Dudek decided they didn’t like that too much.

It was a Champions League final which will go down in folklore. That AC Milan team is one of the greatest ever assembled, but Liverpool didn’t care.

This Reebok outfit is somewhat forgettable, but thanks to that rousing performance, it’ll be fondly remembered by Scousers across the world. Forever.

The results weren’t quite as positive for this away shirt from 2009/10, only having reached a Europa League semi and only mustering 7th spot in the Premier League.

This was undoubtedly the era of peak Fernando Torres, with the Spanish hitman bagging 22 goals in his trademark, no.9 fashion.

Standard Chartered were chosen to replace the iconic Carlsberg brand the next season, this would be their final outing after 16 years on the LFC shirt.

The adidas design has a black base which is complemented by gold stripes and logos, followed up with red trims. Like Torres’ gelled hair, it’s a slick effort.

Jürgen Klopp’s philosophy was in full flow come 2017/18, and it led Liverpool to a Champions League final. But it was one which they unfortunately lost at the final hurdle.

Soon-to-be club legend, Mo Salah put away a mammoth 44 chances during this season. He’d play his part in a formidable trio alongside Bobby Firmino and Sadio Mané.

Like Firmino, New Balance were enjoying their third season with LFC. This shirt would be their finest effort, before leaving their contract in 2020-21.

Taking inspiration from the ‘70s and ‘80s, the thick cuffs and a v-neck collar are used beautifully. The finishing touch is the golden Liver bird, proudly celebrating 125 years of the club.

The Nike home shirt from this season didn’t go down too well with fans, but this sensational away jersey more than made up for their mistake.

Capturing an FA Cup and League Cup double, pipped by 1pt in the Premier League race and runners-up in the UCL. This season was a wild ride for the Anfield faithful.

Aside from the terrifying trio we mentioned, Luis Díaz was the big ticket signing from Porto who would be the understudy to Sadio Mané.

A nod to the iconic away kit of the 1996-97 season, this off-white cracker is offset by teal green and hints of orange. The collar rounds it off with pure class.

Close your eyes Liverpool supporters, it was yet another Champions League runners-up medal for this talented Benítez squad.

Gigantic funny man Peter Crouch was top scorer in 2006/07 with 15. Club-record signing Fernando Torres would show him how it’s done with 33 in 2007/08.

Part of the original adidas Teamgeist takeover, this simple template style worked on every level for the red of LFC.

The piping, the Carlsberg, the plain adi stripes. It all neatly frames the badgework and we’re only able to picture Torres gliding in it. Sorry Crouchy.

5. 2011/12 Away

King Kenny was at the helm, and he led this squad to a League Cup win over Cardiff City after an enthralling final. They’d also get nudged out of the FA Cup title by Chelsea, 2-1.

A 20-year-old named Jordan Henderson signed from Sunderland. He’d go on to appear 360 times for Liverpool. David N’Gog went to Bolton, leaving less of a legacy.

Uruguayan livewire Luis Suárez was top of both the goal and assist charts, with 17 and 8 respectively, across all competitions. He’d up those numbers in future.

The shirt itself takes it back to black, like so many great LFC aways over the years. Silver pinstripes and details work well, and red piping is used sparingly to create an excellent look.

This was the beginning of Kenny Dalglish’s first stint as gaffer, he was their 34-year-old player/manager for 1985/86, leading them to the old First Division title and FA Cup glory.

Ian Rush was the goal-grabbing super striker, netting 71 times across 1985-87. Craig Johnston was in midfield. Who? Only the inventor of the adidas Predator, that’s who.

Grobelaar, Hansen, Lawrenson, Mølby, Whelan, Lee. Some of the greatest to ever pull on a Liverpool shirt, pulled on this sensational adidas effort.

Classic Trefoil badge, a neat v-neck collar. Plus, adidas stripes and cuffs with subtle gold and white detailing. Crown Paints, an iconic sponsor too. Vintage LFC.

3. 1995/96 Away

Now we’re talking. Hurtling into our top 3, it’s a shirt which will conjure up many fond memories for Liverpudlians that made the away trips in this season.

In an ‘almost’ season, they finished 3rd in the Prem and runners-up in the FA Cup. A Scouse whippersnapper named Robbie Fowler would pop in 28 league goals, with 36 in total.

The shirt is so different in its approach, it has to be applauded. Quadrant designs are underrated, and the teal and white works so well here.

It’s one of adidas’ finest productions in collaboration with LFC. Nike tried to emulate it in 2023/24 with a decent, modernised effort. But, you just can’t beat the classics.

2. 1993-95 Home & Away

OK, allow us a little sneaky one, will you? This incredible duo from 1993-95 are as inseparable as John Barnes and the opposition’s byline.

A couple of reasonably average seasons for a squad in transition, they only grabbed a League Cup in 1994/95 under boss Roy Evans.

McManaman and Barnes were the flying wingers, Rush and Fowler formed a young and old partnership for the ages. Jamie Redknapp was making his mark in midfield.

Both colour palettes work perfectly on this template, with adidas stripes slapped across the midriff in a carefree, ‘90s style. Carlsberg, central badges, thoughtful details. Both amazing.

1. 1989-91 Home

Finally, we reach the #1 spot. A classic, in every sense of the word. And a favourite among LFC fans long since its arrival at the back end of the ‘80s.

They’d grab the First Division title in the 1989-90 season, with Dalglish at the helm once again. Super John Barnes was tearing it up on the left flank, hitting 28 goals in total.

Less successful, 1990-91 saw them runners-up to Arsenal in the title race. The future was bright though, as Redknapp and McManaman would have their breakthrough season for the club.

A proper adidas legend, that’s the only way this shirt should be described. Trefoil logo and shoulder stripes join to a smart ‘wrap-over’ collar in white and red.

The base pattern is mesmerising, and the gradient used on the jagged points across the whole jersey is excellent. The sponsor too? Oof, a real piece of eye Candy.

Quintessential grassroots journeyman. I've had more "you look like Gareth Barry" comments than I have career goals.
