Every season, La Liga kicks off its first fixtures in August. The competition runs through until May with a short Christmas break. As there are 20 teams in La Liga competing for the title (or simply to avoid relegation), it means every team plays each other home and away: a total of 380 matches across the full season.
A total of only 9 teams have won the La Liga title since it’s first official season took place in 1929. In 2020/21 Atlético Madrid claimed their third La Liga title, ending Real Madrid (34) and Barcelona’s (26) dominance of the ‘90s, ‘00s and ‘10s. Other notable teams to stick the trophy in their cabinet are Athletic Bilbao (8), Valencia (6), Real Sociedad (2) and Deportivo La Coruña, Sevilla and Real Betis all with one title each.
You may have heard of the two names at the top of the list, Messrs Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the former setting a record which will likely never be broken. Based on their ridiculous numbers, It’s no wonder that the kids of today are so keen to wear Messi’s adidas boots or CR7’s Nike designs. Telmo Zarra of Athletic Bilbao (1940-55), Hugo Sánchez (1981-1994) and Raúl (1994-2010) make up the top 5. Maybe a certain Neymar will be upset about never reaching those heights…
